I feel like Amuro is becoming too mainstream. I miss Play, Queen of Hip Pop, BF. The RnB stuff....these new songs just aren't that memorable. for me at least.
I don't think she's becoming too mainstream at all, she's just continuing to evolve as an artist. That stuff was almost 7, 5, and 4 years ago. It is a well known fact that when anyone, musicians, filmmakers, etc. continue recycling their old stuff, they get left behind. Their fans and the public grow up and get into new things, and if you don't change up a little, they grow tired of you. Only a very FEW people are able to keep their style the same and remain relevant. I think its about time she changed, the 90s are gone, and she changed in 2002-2003. Now the 00s are gone and she needs to move forward in her music. Perhaps her taste in music is also changing, I went from listening to Hip-Hop, to Pop, to Namie and other J-Pop, to K-Pop, back to American rock.
I think the song is nice, but I wished the video had more going on. I wish for once that there was some kind of "love interest" in her videos. It would make it more dramatic when she is in those "lonely" shots.
Her vocals are really strong in this. Her ballads are usually hit or miss for me because she tends to limit her voice in the recording then belt out in live renditions, so it's nice to see a change where she's legitimately belting in this. And I think this ballad is still very much in line with Namie's style.
And I don't know if you realize this, but Namie was always mainstream. She's one of Japan's best selling artists and continues to dominate the charts. If that's not mainstream then I don't know what is.
As for the video, I like the cinematography. Even though it's autumn, the color grade and the lonely shots really give it a sense of cold and bleakness.
